  • Examples of energy conservation:

    • Whenever possible, walk, bike, carpool, or use mass transit. Every gallon of gasoline you save avoids 22 pounds of CO2 emissions.

    • Turn your refrigerator down. Refrigerators account for about 20% of household electricity use. Also, check the gaskets around your refrigerator/freezer doors to make sure they are clean and sealed tightly.

    • Insulate your walls and ceilings. This can save 20 to 30 percent of home heating bills and reduce CO2 emissions by 140 to 2100 pounds per year. If you have electric heat, you might also consider switching to more efficient gas or oil.

  • Example of conservation of energy:

    • Pushing a car uphill → To push the car, you have to work against the force of gravity. Your body has to use energy to do work. Most of the energy your body uses is gained by the car as you push it uphill. The energy your body loses is pretty much equal to the work it does against gravity. And the energy the car gains is the same as the work done. So no energy is created or destroyed here: you're simply converting energy stored as fuel inside your body into potential energy stored by the car (because of its height).
